The patterns and pathways that guide the process. So I’m not figuring out what to do in the dark, but acting with my eyes wide open. Structures and supports on which to hook actions. Routes and maps. A step by step method to follow. Like in a recipe, or an experiment.
It’s important to me to use a range of the frameworks that are articulated, so that I can get a broad experience. Some are more suited to land based projects, some more so for people and social projects.
There are other influences that guide my process that I’ll explore here too, namely open space technology and emergent strategy. For a long while now I’ve written about this notion of a ‘systems and complexity approach to social change’. For me, these frameworks are imbricated within that notion.
On my PDC I was encouraged to use the SADIM framework.

EMERGENT STRATEGY
OPEN SPACE TECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY BUILDING
A creative way for hosting meetings, conferences, and community building events. There is a specific purpose, but no formal agenda beyond the overall theme.
Guiding Principles
1. Whoever comes are the right people
2. Whenever it starts is the right time
3. Wherever it is, is the right place
4. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have, be prepared to be surprised! 5. When it’s over, it’s over
6. The law of 2 feet : At any time, anyone can use their two feet and go to a different discussion
Process
1. Opening Circle : The whole group decides on what topics will be discussed. After a brainstorm of topics, the group chooses the most relevant ones to be the focus of the discussions
2. Facilitator explains principle of open space technology
3. There are multiple unfacilitated conversations are happening at the same time
based on the chosen topics
4. Closing Circle : comment and reflection

GOBRADIME
A permaculture design process clarifies our goals and ideas, gets them on paper, and provides a road map for implementation. A carefully thought-out ,written design saves time and money, prevents mistakes, and helps communicate ideas to others. It is much easier to correct mistakes on paper than on land. Of course, your long-term needs and goals will change, and a good design leaves plenty of room for those changes. HEATHER J0 FLORES, Permaculture Women’s Guild.
GOALS:
What is your specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, timebound, ecological, and rewarding (S.M.A.R.T.E.R.) goal for this design?
OBSERVATION:
Use all of your senses to learn as much as you can about the design problem/challenge.
BOUNDARIES:
Choose, find, change, negotiate, and establish your boundaries, both visible and invisible.
RESOURCES:
Everything is a resource, and everything has a need. Tap into the waste stream and turn pollution in to abundance.
ANALYSIS:
Deep thought and careful consideration of the information accumulated thus far. Take your time but don’t get analysis paralysis!
DESIGN:
Phase planning, overlays, patterns to details. Create a realistic, logical plan of action that considers all of the above information.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Use a task-based process that moves the design from idea to reality, one step at a time.
MANAGEMENT (MAINTENANCE, MONITORING):
Monitoring, Maintainance, Messes, Mistakes. This is the place where you learn more and discover new problems to solve.
EVALUATE & ENJOY:
Take a nap in the hammock, then get out there and share what you’ve learned. Then, do it all again!
